Our Bathroom Remodel Process in Sacramento: From First Call to Final Walkthrough
A bathroom remodel is one of the best upgrades you can make to a home, and one of the most stressful if you don’t know what to expect. At Golden Valley Construction & Remodel Inc., we’re a licensed, bonded and insured California general contractor serving Sacramento and Greater Sacramento. Here’s how a bathroom remodel works with us, who makes which decisions, and who provides what.
Step 1: Free Estimate and Walkthrough
Every project starts with a conversation. We visit your home, look at the current bathroom, and listen to what you want: more storage, a walk-in shower, a better layout, or simply a fresh look. We’ll also note anything that affects the work, such as old plumbing, water damage, or tight spaces. Then we give you a clear, written estimate at no cost.
Step 2: Planning the Scope and Layout
Together, we decide what the project includes. Are we keeping the layout or moving the toilet, tub or vanity? Moving plumbing costs more than a like-for-like swap, so we’ll explain your options and their price differences before anything is decided. You tell us your goals and budget, and we tell you what’s realistic.
Step 3: Choosing Materials (Who Decides What)
This is the step that surprises people most, so here is how it works.
You choose the look. The style is your call: tile, vanity, countertop, faucets, shower fixtures, lighting, paint color, and mirrors. We never pick finishes for you and charge you for them.
We guide the practical side. We tell you what holds up in a wet room, what’s easy to clean, what fits your budget, and what will cause problems later. If a material is a poor choice for a shower, we’ll tell you honestly.
We handle the behind-the-walls materials. Waterproofing, backer board, framing, plumbing and electrical supplies, and the other parts you never see are our decision, because they decide how long your bathroom lasts.
| Item | Who decides | Who provides |
|---|---|---|
| Layout and scope | You and us, together | n/a |
| Tile, vanity, countertop | You (with our advice) | Included in the proposal, or supplied by you |
| Faucets, shower fixtures, lighting | You | Included in the proposal, or supplied by you |
| Waterproofing and backer board | Us | Us |
| Plumbing and electrical work | Us | Us, with licensed trades where required |
| Demolition and debris removal | Us | Us |
| Permits | Us | Us |
If you’d like to buy your own fixtures or tile, talk to us first. We’ll confirm sizes and specifications so everything fits and you don’t pay for a return.
Step 4: Written Proposal and Contract
Once the scope and materials are chosen, you receive a written proposal with the full scope of work, the materials, the price, and a payment schedule tied to the progress of the job. You’ll know what you’re paying for before we start.
Step 5: Permits and Scheduling
Depending on the work, a bathroom remodel may need a permit from your city or county. We take care of that. We also set a start date and a realistic timeline in writing, since the schedule depends on the scope and on how long your selected materials take to arrive. Ordering early keeps your project from stalling.
Step 6: Demolition and Behind-the-Walls Work
We protect your floors and the path through your home, then remove the old fixtures, tile and flooring. Once the walls are open, we do any plumbing and electrical changes and fix problems we find, such as rot, mold or damaged framing. Older homes sometimes hold surprises, and we’ll show you anything we find and explain the options before moving forward. For homes built before 1978, we follow lead-safe practices.
Step 7: Waterproofing and Installation
This is the stage that decides whether your bathroom stays beautiful. We waterproof the shower and wet areas, install backer board, then set the tile, flooring, vanity, toilet and shower fixtures. Careful prep work here is what prevents leaks and cracked grout down the road.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
We finish with paint, trim, grout and sealing, mirrors, hardware, and accessories like towel bars. Then we test every faucet, drain, light and fan.
Step 9: Final Walkthrough
We walk through the finished bathroom with you and check every detail together. If something isn’t right, we fix it. We clean up and haul away all debris before we call the job done.
